Consolidated says “don’t do it” to Nike

Looks like Consolidated has brought out the big guns again. They’re waging war against Nike and all of their corporate greed for trying to capitalize on the skate market. You can read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel if you’re not familiar with what’s up.

“I’m willing to go out of business for this cause,” said Guisinger. “What have I got to lose? This is a time to wake up and come out fighting. We’re not going to lose everything to corporate America.”

I admire the dedication to the cause but let me tell you how I see it. “Corporate Amercia” is almost every company in skateboarding. Yes, most of the guys/girls who own skateboard companies were former pros or had some sort of “relevance” with in the industry. But believe me, all of the old guys who own skate companies are in this game to make a buck and capitalize on skateboarding, and most of them are living quite well. Some own lots of Real Estate and other business’ ; Richard Novak (NHS), Tod Swank (Tum Yeto), Per Welinder / Tony Hawk (Bird House) and several others. I thing it’s great that these guys make the money and contribute to skateboarding in the way that they do. But, do you think they distribute the money the way it should be? That’s an easy answer, no. So, yes Nike is trying to cash in on skateboarding’s popularity but, who cares, as long as they’re paying their Pros good money, putting ads in magazines and continuing to provide quality products. Besides, the majority of the people who are buying all of the Nike stuff, are not skateboarders. It’s the Pharell “wana a be’s” and the guys who are down with the exclusivity. If you’re going to buy into the Anti Nike stuff, then more power to you, you have that right, but do some research into the skateboard industry. It’s easy to discover the motivation behind a lot most of the skateboard companies is the $.

  1. does nike have the right to sell skate shoes? yes. do i have the right to inform every young skater in my town about how nike gives nothing back to the skate community and encourage them to give their money to companies that give something back? unfortunatly for nike, yes. i also tell them about nike bailing on skateboarding to focus on their international soccer market instead of trying to help us fix the legal problems inherent with skateboarding at the time(no public skateparks, poor liability laws forced cities to criminalize skateboarding on all public property, skating on private property got you arrested, it left no legal places to skate).
